Plastic Surgery Q & A

What should I know about ENT doctors and plastic surgery?

Many patients don’t realize that ENT (ear, nose, and throat) doctors like Dr. Han can receive additional education and training to specialize in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. This is a natural combination of skills because ENT doctors are already highly trained in the complex structures of your face, head, and neck.

In addition to performing surgery to treat diseases and structural problems, such as a deviated septum, Dr. Han performs many procedures to enhance the appearance of your face, including two of the most common plastic surgery procedures: rhinoplasty and blepharoplasty.

What is rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is surgery to reshape your nose. Many patients choose to have nose surgery because they don’t like the appearance of their noses. However, rhinoplasty can also be done to repair structural defects that affect your breathing and to reconstruct your nose after a traumatic injury.

During rhinoplasty, Dr. Han can:

  • Reduce nose size
  • Change bridge width
  • Improve symmetry
  • Straighten a crooked nose
  • Eliminate a bump or depression in the bridge
  • Correct the size, shape, or position of your nostrils

Whenever possible, Dr. Han performs a closed rhinoplasty, making the incision inside your nose so you don’t have a scar. However, more complex surgeries may require an open procedure, which means the incision is made in the skin between your nostrils. An open procedure leaves a scar but it’s very small and barely noticeable.

What is rhytidectomy?

Rhytidectomy is the surgical term for a facelift. You may be considering a rhytidectomy to counteract the effects of aging on your face and jawline. During your rhytidectomy, Dr. Han makes incisions along your hairline to create a flap of tissue that he lifts and pulls to reduce sagging. He also adjusts the muscle and fat under your skin to improve the contour and shape of your face for a more youthful look.

What is blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure to make changes in your eyelids. You may be a good candidate for blepharoplasty if you want to eliminate problems such as:

  • Saggy or droopy upper eyelids
  • Extra skin on the upper or lower eyelids
  • Fat accumulation that makes your eyelids look puffy
  • Bags under your eyes
  • Fine lines and wrinkles on your lower eyelid

Dr. Han can perform plastic surgery on your upper eyelid, lower eyelid, or both at the same time. He makes an incision in a place where the scar is naturally concealed, then removes excess fat and skin, tightens the underlying muscles, and repositions fat, if needed for contouring.
